Researchers in Japan Explored the Limit of Plastic Cutting in Ceramic


Researchers in Japan used polycrystalline diamond cutting tools to cut Al2O3 and Si3N4 ceramics and found that coarse polycrystalline diamond cutting tools had less wear and better processing effect during the cutting process. When they used diamond cutting tools to cut ZrO2 ceramics, the effect was similar to that of cutting metal.

They explored the limit of plastic cutting in ceramic.

The critical cutting depth of Al2O3 ceramic is apmax=2um, that of SiC ceramic is apmax=1um, and that of Si3N4 ceramic is apmax=4um ( ap>apmax, ceramic material causes brittle failure;  ap<apmax, it is plastic cutting ).
